The NHS recommends that older adults engage in daily physical activity to improve strength, balance, and flexibility, and to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. We were delighted to catch up with one of our members, Gillian, who demonstrates how age is no barrier to fitness and health. At 83 years old, Gillian proudly shares her age, proving that staying active is possible at any stage of life.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES, ONE STEP AT A TIME
Gillian’s fitness journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. She underwent her first hip replacement in 2011, followed by two knee replacements between 2015 and 2018, and a second hip replacement in 2023. Despite these surgeries, Gillian remains undeterred. She joined Gym 108 at 60 years old and has been a dedicated member ever since.
FINDING STRENGTH AND AGILITY IN MOVEMENT
“I’m still doing spin and aqua classes regularly!” Gillian shares candidly. These classes have been crucial in maintaining her muscle strength and agility. The consistent exercise not only supports her physical health but also enhances her overall well-being. Aqua classes, in particular, offer numerous benefits for older members. The water supports the body, reducing stress on joints and helping to reduce arthritis pain. It also enhances flexibility and balance, decreasing the risk of falls. Additionally, aqua exercises help maintain bone density and muscle strength, crucial for staying mobile and independent, while boosting cardiovascular fitness and overall vitality.
THE POWER OF COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT
Gillian values more than just the workouts at Gym 108. “It is local, and all the staff have always been very helpful and friendly. I enjoy the company of other gym users,” she explains. The supportive community at Gym 108 creates a welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.
