What’s new at Nirvana Spa this spring!
27 March 2025Honouring the incredible legacy of Barry Horwood, whose dedication shaped Nirvana Spa from the very beginning.
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Barry Horwood, a man who played a truly significant role in the history of Nirvana Spa and the Barley family. Barry passed away over the weekend following a courageous battle with motor neurone disease, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, kindness, and an incredible contribution to our story.
Barry and his wife Pauline were part of Nirvana Spa from the very beginning. Barry worked with us from 1972 for over 30 years until he retired. He supported our first Maintenance team, maintaining and cleaning the whole establishment singlehandedly for many years; he even taught Sean and Neil the essential skill of backwashing — just one example of the invaluable knowledge he passed down. His expertise in building maintenance and swimming pools was unmatched, and his steady presence shaped Nirvana in more ways than can be counted.
Sean Barley, our CEO, shared how much Barry meant to him and his family. Sean’s father, the founder of Nirvana Spa, and Barry worked closely together from the very beginning. Pauline and Sean’s mother were raised as sisters, making Barry a true uncle in every sense of the word. Sean reflected on Barry’s warmth and guidance, saying that his generosity of spirit and steady hand were an inspiration to him growing up.
Barry also had a lasting influence on Neil Phelps, our Maintenance Director, who learned so much from Barry’s wealth of knowledge and experience. Barry’s work ethic was inspiring, his generosity of spirit immeasurable, and his impact undeniable. He was a constant source of support and guidance — a man who embodied the values and heart of Nirvana Spa.
Barry leaves behind his loving wife Pauline, his two sons Jeremy and Nicholas, and his cherished grandchildren. His love for his family was evident in everything he did, and they were his greatest source of pride.
Though he will be deeply missed, Barry’s legacy will live on in the business he helped build and the many lives he touched along the way.
Thank you, Barry, for everything
