5 November 2024Gym Anxiety: A Practical Guide to Conquering “Gymtimidation”
Ever bought a gym membership with the best intentions but found yourself too anxious to step inside? Or avoided trying a new class because of what others might think? You’re not alone. "Gymtimidation" affects nearly half of all gym-goers. It's ok to feel anxious, nervous, or out of place. A gym is a new environment where you're pushing your mind and body to new limits, and it's natural to feel intimidated. The good news is, with the right approach, you can push past that anxiety and reclaim your confidence.
Where to Begin?
- Book a 1-1 Session with a Fitness Coach
Start by working with a coach to design a workout routine tailored to you. A coach can walk you through the equipment and exercises, helping you feel more confident with every move. When you know what you’re doing, the gym will feel less intimidating, and you’ll go in with a game plan. - Find a Quiet Corner or Visit During Off-Peak Hours
If crowds make you uncomfortable, opt for a quieter time. Middle of the day or late evening are usually less busy, giving you more space to focus on your workout. Our gym offers plenty of room, so find a spot where you feel most at ease and make it your own. - Join a Beginner Class and Arrive Early
New to classes? Try a beginner-friendly option, arrive a bit early, and pick a spot where you feel comfortable. Following an instructor can take away some of the uncertainty. Plus, group classes often foster a sense of community that can ease gym anxiety. - Create a Workout Schedule & Reward Yourself
Planning your workouts can help you stay motivated and reduce anxiety. After sticking to your plan, reward yourself with something you’ll look forward to—like a new gym top or an indulgent treat. Knowing you have a reward waiting at the end can boost your confidence and make the experience more enjoyable.
Ashleigh’s Story
I remember feeling exactly the same—nervous, avoiding eye contact, and sticking to the treadmill near the exit. It wasn’t until I started pushing past that anxiety and showing up consistently that I realised everyone is there for their own reasons, not to judge me.
I once started dancing between sets when a song came on, panicked, and looked around—only to realize no one was paying attention. That was a turning point. Now, I’m known as the person who’s always smiling at the gym, and that energy helps others feel comfortable too.
Moving Forward
The gym can feel intimidating, but the biggest critic is often the voice inside your own head. Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath and remind yourself that everyone’s focused on their own journey. You're not alone in this, and there's a place for everyone at the gym—especially you.
